A man claiming to have the world's smallest penis has been issued some warnings after undergoing a life-changing procedure.

Michael Phillips has faced a number of difficulties thanks to his 0.38-inch "micropenis," as he claimed the condition "has made everyday tasks," such as using the restroom, "extremely difficult." To help, Michael has undergone a penis-enhancing procedure, having raised money for the treatment via a GoFundMe page.

The procedure, which Michael was booked for on August 17, involved Michael getting an injection of semi-permanent dermal filler to increase the girth by about 10% to 30%. While the treatment has not increased the length, an expert has warned "function always comes before appearance."

Aesthetic surgeon Dr. Ozan Balık spoke with The Mirror US about what Michael can expect from his treatment. He warned, "This is not a routine cosmetic procedure. The patient also has urination problems. Function always comes before appearance."

Balık said the increase in girth will not necessarily solve Michael's urinary problems. He explained, "A bigger penis does not always mean a well-functioning penis. The problem with urination will not be solved by a filler or fat transfer. It needs to be assessed by an experienced reconstructive urologist. And a plastic and reconstructive surgeon should be involved, too."

The expert continued, "The doctor should check whether there is an abnormality affecting the urethra and whether an underlying anatomical or hormonal condition is contributing to the problem. Then the patient may try penile traction."

Balık said some men have reported "a modest increase in length over a period of time using a penile traction device." However, he warned that girth does not increase with this type of device.

"The buried penis is a condition in which part of the shaft of the penis is covered by surrounding skin, and there may be excess suprapubic skin. Uncovering the penis by surgery can be very important for functions related to the penis in men with this condition," the plastic surgery expert said.

He further suggested, "A total reconstruction of the phallus is a method to be used in cases of a very short penis and severe congenital penile curvature. It is a very complex procedure that must be performed in stages. Such a procedure should be performed by experienced teams in specialized centers."

Michael had initially hoped to raise $6,000 for his filler treatment. His GoFundMe has surpassed this and, at the time of writing, Michael has raised $13,717. He said the extra money will be used to cover any additional medical costs, post-procedure prescriptions, and travel and lodging for the procedure.

He will also use the money to "support my living expenses and lost income while I am recovering and unable to work." Balık suggested $6,000 "sounds very reasonable for a genital area procedure."

He explained the person carrying out the procedure "would have to inject material, have special expertise, and post-care." He then warned, "Cost of your treatment should not be the deciding factor; there are several other more important questions you should be asking, such as: What are they going to be filling with? How experienced is the doctor?"

Balık concluded, "The measurement of success in a case such as this is not in terms of inches, rather in terms of degree of improvement with respect to urinary function, as well as overall genitourinary and sexual function, and thus in overall quality of life. A thorough and comprehensive assessment by means of a reconstructive and urological perspective should take precedence over a procedure of filler injection."

Dr Ozan Balık is a plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon.
