PEOPLE has the exclusive premiere of the Will Trent season 4 full-length trailer

In the upcoming episodes, Will (Ramón Rodríguez) is faced with a blast from the past when James Ulster (special guest star Greg Germann) returns

Will Trent season 4 premieres Tuesday, Jan. 6 on ABC

It's time for Will Trent to face his inner monster.

In the season 4 trailer of the hit ABC series, revealed exclusively by PEOPLE, Will (Ramón Rodríguez) is struggling to control his emotions when he learns James Ulster (Greg Germann) has escaped from prison. Last seen in season 2, Ulster is the man who killed Will's mother and then left an infant Will in a trash can to die.

"You didn't create this guy," Angie (Erika Christensen) tells Will, who replies, "No, but he created me."

From there, it's clear the GBI agent is fighting a losing battle to keep his emotions in check, as he seems to hear Ulster's voice in his head and hurls a rock through the window of what appears to be one his old foster homes. All the while, Will's therapist, Dr. Roach (Margaret Cho) tries to convince him to stop repressing his feelings and let himself be angry.

Near the end of the trailer, Will is seen driving away from an unknown location with bruised and bloodied knuckles as Ulster is heard saying, "So there is a monster in there after all." Will ominously replies, "Maybe."

'Will Trent' season 4

Will Trent season 4 picks up five months after the attack on the GBI, which left Amanda's (Sonja Sohn) life hanging in the balance. "A figure from Will’s past escapes prison, forcing him to defy orders and launch a search that rips open old wounds and threatens to destroy everything he’s fought to rebuild," the premiere episode's official synopsis reads.

While the trailer focuses in on Will and Ulster's latest encounter, a pregnant Angie, Faith (Iantha Richardson), Nico (Cora Lu Tran), Wilks (Kevin Daniels) and even Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin), who was last seen in the middle of a medical crisis due to a brain tumor, all make appearances, as well. Will's beloved chihuahua Betty (Bluebell) is also on hand to offer moral support and fabulous fashion moments.

Based on the bestselling book series of the same name by Karin Slaughter, Will Trent follows the titular GBI agent as he tries to process his complicated past as a child of foster care, while also working from within the system to hold those in power accountable. He works alongside his partner, Faith, ex-girlfriend Angie, her partner, Michael Ormewood, and Wagner, the deputy director of the GBI to solve a wide range of cases.

"This is a crime drama that has a lot of heart and doesn't take itself so serious," Rodríguez told PEOPLE in January 2023. "There's some seriousness, there's some drama, but yet we are able to thread the needle with including some humor in there and levity."

Last season, the series hit new emotional heights as Will tried to reckon with accidentally shooting and killing a child while in he field, and Angie fell off the wagon following the death of her mother.

Will Trent season 4 premieres Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 8:00 p.m. EST on ABC. New episodes stream the next day on Hulu and Disney+.
