Jonathan Brandis seemed to have the world at his feet during his teenage years.

A global heartthrob with a massively successful NBC TV show and glittering Hollywood career with multiple film credits under his belt by age 17, the young star appeared headed for an incredibly bright future. Devastatingly, just ten years later, Jonathan ended his own life, leaving colleagues and admirers around the world absolutely heartbroken.

Jonathan's innate ability was spotted when he was only two years old, and his captivating appearance landed him child modeling gigs after being noticed by talent scouts. Before long he started appearing in TV adverts, and from there his momentum became relentless. It comes as tragic star Hayden Panettiere was set for a burst of 'reinvention' before her untimely death.

At merely six, he secured the part of Kevin Buchanan in the daytime drama One Life To Live, though it wasn't until his mother, educator Mary, and his fire department father, Gregory, decided to relocate the family to Los Angeles seeking better prospects that his profession genuinely took off, reports the Express.

Roles in iconic TV shows, including The Wonder Years, Full House, and Who's the Boss, came his way throughout his adolescent years, and when he won the role of Bastian Bux in the follow-up to The Neverending Story in 1990, his trajectory toward fame seemed completely inevitable. That year proved pivotal for the rising star, as he also secured the role of a young Bill Denbrough in Stephen King's celebrated miniseries It, which received tremendous critical acclaim and opened new doors.

Parts in the films Sidekicks and Ladybugs came next, before his most prized opportunity materialized. Jonathan was chosen to play Lucas Wolenczak in Steven Spielberg's 1990s series SeaQuest DSV, and virtually overnight, the teenage performer became one of the globe's most in-demand heartthrobs. At the peak of his popularity, Jonathan received 4,000 fan letters weekly and was named number one on Seventeen magazine's top 10 sexiest guys list.

Jonathan himself was excited about what lay ahead, and, along with his acting career, he revealed he nurtured dreams of eventually working behind the scenes as a writer and director. In a 1994 interview, he said: "I want to be remembered as an actor who put in some good work in the beginning of his career, even better work at the end of his career and slowly, successfully made the transition into writing and directing."

However, the aspiration started to crumble when SeaQuest DSV was canceled in 1994, and Jonathan found himself battling to land parts in an industry where he had previously been among its most beloved young performers.

He did secure a role in Bad Girls from Valley High, though the production was initially put on hold before ultimately being released on DVD in 2005 - something Jonathan would tragically never witness. In 2002, he landed a role alongside Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell in Hart's War, a film he desperately hoped would reignite his stalling career.

Unfortunately, this proved to be a dead end, as most of his scenes were cut from the final edit, leaving him growing increasingly anxious that his best days in Hollywood were behind him.

Rumors also circulated that he had auditioned for the role of Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars trilogy, though by that point Jonathan was in his mid-20s and casting directors were reportedly convinced he was too old for the part.

The last film he completed was Puerto Vallarta Squeeze, a project that earned him high praise from co-star Harvey Keitel. The Hollywood icon told producer Robert Katz that he firmly believed Jonathan had an extraordinarily bright future.

Robert later recalled: "Harvey even said to me a couple of times, 'This kid is good'. When we were in the editing room looking at him, we all said, 'This guy's going to have a big career.'".

Tragically, Jonathan would never live to see the film hit the screen. At 11.40pm on November 11, 2003, one of the actor's friends stopped by his Hollywood apartment, only to discover him lifeless in the hallway.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, and despite being transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center, doctors were unable to save the young star. He was just 27.

His death was ruled a suicide, though Jonathan had left no note behind. In the days before his tragic death, Jonathan had spent time with his parents.

His mother, Mary, later recalled: "He wanted to be with us. We knew something was wrong. We knew something was weighing on him, but we didn't know what it was or how bad it was."

In the years following his heartbreaking loss, his father, Gregory, has opened up publicly about the profound toll of mental illness and the critical need to reach out for support. He said, "Jonathan was very smart and he was very polite and always easygoing. In a sad way, he was probably bipolar. [His death] wasn't due to the entertainment industry. I look back now, and in his 20s, he showed signs of manic depression. I hope that anyone suffering can go get help."

In 2021, former child star Soleil Moon Frye released her documentary Kid90, chronicling her earlier life in the public eye. She said of Jonathan: "I found so many voicemails Jonathan left me when we were kids. Some of them were 10 minutes long, his innermost thoughts. It just made me cry listening to them. He was a real friend."
