It’s time for your Southern Hospitality Season 4 recap! This week, we head to Punta Cana for Maddi’s first international DJ gig, Grace Lilly has a heart-to-heart with Leva, and Emmy makes things about her 24/7 again. Here’s everything that happened in Southern Hospitality Season 4, Episode 9: ā€œSun’s Out, Shade’s Out!ā€

What Went Down on Southern Hospitality Season 4 Episode 9?

On the heels of a successful Emo Night Event, Joe and the boys are relaxing and playing golf. He realizes that he may have been a bit dramatic about turning 30. Maybe just a bit?

Now that his night is over, he is focusing on Maddi’s birthday. A friend is lending him a yacht, and he wants to throw her a pirate-themed surprise birthday party.

In the evening, the crew is back and busy at Republic. Mia shows up with a big group of girlfriends and asks if there’s a table for her. Michols says it should be no problem, but Lake is making a big deal about Mia not calling first. Lake is tense around Mia in general.

And that’s not the only tension. Apparently, Emmy spammed Michols a ton of ā€œChatGPTā€ messages about how she felt gaslit, and he didn’t support her, and how she is not allowed to feel how she feels. Michols is over it. He thinks Emmy is being selfish.

It’s Maddi’s birthday, and now Joe wants to make it all about her. He brings her coffee in bed, and she tells him she wants a quiet day because she’s exhausted from his birthday weekend. Uh-oh. Meanwhile, everyone is on the yacht in pirate regalia, waiting to surprise her.

Joe looks worried for a second, but still gets her out of bed and to the marina with the promise of a romantic day kayaking. Not surprisingly, everyone else seems to understand that this may not be the best idea, but they play along.

Maddi is certainly surprised when everyone pops out and yells happy birthday. She immediately whispers that she wanted it to just be the two of them. Epic fail.

Maddi is a good sport about it, though, and climbs on board. She loves everyone’s pirate garb and asks Joe if he brought a pirate costume for her. He forgot it in the truck (second epic fail). In the end, she makes a costume out of the decorations. She’s cool like that.

Everyone has fun on the boat for Maddi’s big day, despite Lake showing how pissed off she is at Mia and Molly (what else is new). Michols is talking about their fun trip to Punta Cana, and Justin is revealing just how much he likes Charley.

But naturally, it wouldn’t be a gathering without Emmy talking about herself. She shares with Maddi that she and Michols are really awkward, and she doesn’t understand why (maybe it was the million spam texts?).

Maddi understands why Michols is upset. As a person of color, he is also impacted by her running her mouth about Brad (who, unlike Emmy, hasn’t brought it up again). Emmy is expecting Michols to remain loyal to her no matter what (even if she’s wrong).

Maddi shares that while she feels for Emmy, she understands Michols too because ā€œloyalty is important, but blind loyalty is bullsh*t.ā€ She needs to put that on a t-shirt!

Grace Lilly bares her soul to Leva

Grace Lilly makes her return! While the gang is out at sea, Grace heads over to Zach’s Daiqs to talk to Leva. Grace admits she wasn’t in a good place. Not surprisingly, Leva knew that she just didn’t push.

Leva admits that Grace was such a force when she first started working at Republic. But over time, she became unreliable, canceling shifts and being unprofessional. Eventually, Grace got into a verbal argument (about a boy), and they had to part ways.

Grace reveals she is in therapy and sober. She reveals she’s not in a good place with Joe and Maddi and misses them. She feels isolated because no one is inviting her to anything (and yet Emmy always gets an invite?) Grace is working on herself and is one month sober.

She also tells Leva she misses Republic and would want to come back. To be fair, Leva doesn’t say no, but she thinks a club scene is not good for Grace’s healing right now. Instead, she says maybe Grace can focus on the card readings and do afternoon clubs or come to Zach’s Daiqs for events. Leva wants her to focus more on the ā€œGrace experienceā€ instead of the VIP experience.

The lowdown on Lake, Oisin, and double standards

It’s time for Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Mia has never been to the DR, but she’s a Caribbean gal and is thrilled to be there.

We learn a lot about Michols and his family, and even Mia and her family, and it’s nice seeing the flashbacks. Emmy is sad that she and Michols are on the outs because she wants to share this experience with him.

Meanwhile, Maddi is focusing on work. She can’t have fun until the gig is done, which makes sense. It’s a big deal for her. The crew is given two large luxury suites with private yards and pools.

To be safe, Maddi has separated Lake and Mia. She doesn’t want any girl fights or drama. Molly is still confused as to why Lake is mad at her, even though Molly’s former beef with Jordyn is resolved.

Mia and Justin think Lake is a hypocrite. Rumor has it, she went home with Oisin the night of Joe’s birthday and had a little threesome fun with him and her date. But Oisin has a girlfriend. So Lake’s cool with their behavior, but is mad at Mia for going out with Justin, who was not Jordyn’s boyfriend?

While the tea is being spilled, Maddi’s DJ coordinator arrives and tells her about the show. She’ll be in the pool while she performs, and she is thrilled.

Maddi is happy to be back doing what she loves. She needed the break for her mental health, but she’s ready to hit the decks (literally). This is her first international gig. She’s hoping to do more in the future, so she’s feeling the pressure.

Meanwhile, speaking of feeling better than ever, Justin is really enjoying talking with Charley, despite technically being a single guy on vacation. He should be living it up, but he prefers chatting with her. That’s very telling.

Michols and Emmy talk, and it (unsurprisingly) goes nowhere

Micholes goes to talk with Emmy before dinner because he doesn’t want a repeat of the Lake incident, where they were yelling over the table. Emmy shares that she didn’t feel Michols’ support.

Meanwhile, Michols says he supported the whole time. He held her hand, he dried her tears, and he calmed her down repeatedly. Michols thinks she’s being unreasonable to disregard all of that because he won’t defend her to Brad. He can’t get behind her microaggressive language.

He tells Emmy that as a friend, he tries to be honest with her and hopes she will do the same. Having said that, Michols explains to her that she will never understand what it’s like to be his skin color or to be Mia, Lake, or Brad. He says he hopes she will drop it.

Spoiler alert: she doesn’t. She goes off on another rant about how she felt unsafe, and Brad stalked her, and she felt threatened. Michols can’t even believe it. It does not sit well with him, and it spills over to dinner, where he looks like he’s about to cry. He’s just so done.

TO BE CONTINUED…

Southern Hospitality airs Thursday nights at 9/8c on Bravo. It streams on Peacock.

TELL US – DO YOU THINK EMMY WILL EVER UNDERSTAND? SHOULD MICHOLS LET IT GO, OR IS HE RIGHT TO BE UPSET?
