U.S. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina
Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) voiced support on Sunday for Sen. Darline Graham (R-S.C.), stating “there’s no doubt” she is qualified to serve in the U.S. Senate following her recent comments on national security during a primary debate.
During a South Carolina Republican Senate primary debate last week, Graham was asked whether Taiwan and the South China Sea represent national security issues for the United States. In response, Graham stated that she is “not that informed on national security” but supports “the military.”
Speaking on NBC News’s “Meet the Press”, moderator Kristen Welker asked Scott directly about her fitness for office: “Senator Scott, is Darline Graham qualified to be a U.S. senator?”
“Well, there’s no doubt, Kristen. Darlene Graham is the real deal,” Scott responded, adding that Graham “is ready to take on the issues that everyday Americans are facing.”
Scott cited Graham’s recent legislative track record in Washington following her appointment to finish the remaining term of her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

“One other thing that’s really important: I watched her on the campaign trail. I watched her go through two funerals for her brother, and then I watched her carefully for 30 days in the Senate, casting deciding votes for the [attorney general], working on getting her first bill passed, the Russia sanctions bill,” Scott said. “What did I assess? Highly qualified, incredibly competent, ready for prime time.”
