Rosalind Eleazar had to rediscover her singing voice for her latest movie.
The actress, 38, tells PEOPLE in a recent interview that although she grew up singing, she had to put in the work to get her vocals back into shape to portray a struggling Hollywood actress with a remarkable voice in her new movie with Chris Rock, Misty Green.
Some of the filmās most memorable moments come when the Slow Horses star shows off her vocal talents as the title character, a former Emmy winner struggling to find acting work ā and a new home ā years after her big Hollywood breakthrough failed to translate into lasting success.
āIt was really, really, really special to reconnect. Thereās something really special about music, just generally, and the purity of it, and the connection between instrument, whether that be a physical instrument or voice to the audience in a way thatās quite unique in all the disciplines,ā Eleazar says. āYou canāt edit it. I mean, you can if youāve recorded it, but live ā the closest thing I can think of is theater. And it opens you up.ā
Misty Green, written and directed by Rock, 61, marks a major leading role for Eleazar, just seven years after making her film debut in 2019ās The Personal History of David Copperfield.
āIt opens you up, singing, because you have to connect to a place,ā she adds. āSo it was really good to reconnect to my voice in a way, and nerve-wracking and exposing.ā

While Eleazarās title character rarely lets her nerves spring to the surface, the actress says she certainly felt an āintimidatingā factor working with Rock, whose comedy and acting work she admired as a kid growing up in London.

āHeās totally an icon in the U.K., and I remember when I had my first Zoom with him, and I thought, āThatās Chris Rock there. This is Chris Rock,āā she recalls. āWeāre doing an audition with Chris Rock. Mad!āā
Eleazar is surrounded by an A-list cast in Misty Green that includes Adam Driver, Topher Grace, Daniel Kaluuya, Anna Kendrick and Rock himself, among others.
āI remember being chronically nervous for my first day on this,ā she says. āItās the first time that youāre meeting your new team. All the different actors, all the different departments. Thereās a lot of people on set. Itās like a first day at school, and itās nerve-wracking. And then once it starts, itās insane how quickly you become comfortable with the crew. By the end of the first day, like, āOh, it feels like weāve been doing this for two weeks already.āā

Luckily for Eleazar, she knows how to embrace her own nerves on set and on screen.
āIām kind of the camp that feel the fear and do it anyway,ā she says of dealing with nerves elsewhere in the interview. āI donāt think you can get rid of nerves, so you kind of just kind of acknowledge that theyāre there. And itās a kind of a good thing to feel nervous because it means you care. So I sometimes try and just embrace it. Iām like, āOh, Iām really nervous right now. Cool. Thatās okay. Iām nervous. Cool.ā That somehow softens me a little bit.ā
