Apple TV's sci-fi dystopian drama, Silo, is based on Hugh Howey's trilogy novel series. Created by Graham Yost, the series is set in a dystopian future where a community resides in a giant silo deep underground, bound by a strict set of regulations that residents believe are designed to protect them.

The series features a star-studded cast including Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Robbins and Harriet Walter, to name a few. All three seasons of the sci-fi dystopian show have received a positive response from both critics and audiences. The series has also been renewed for its fourth and final season. Ahead of its release, it has finally revealed the terrifying truth behind the apocalypse and the creation of the silo.

In Season 3, the show has adopted a dual-timeline structure. While Juliette Nichols navigates threats in the present timeline, the other storyline takes the viewers back to 300 years, where journalist Helen Drew and Congressman Daniel Keen are chasing a conspiracy. In Season 3 Episode 8 titled 'Gray Goo,' in the before-time plot, it was finally revealed what caused the apocalypse. Turns out the catastrophe was not due to a pandemic, nuclear war, or any drastic climate change. Instead, the truth was way more terrifying: nanotechnology was weaponized.

The truth behind the apocalypse in Silo

For years, the residents believed the outside world was either a dangerous wasteland or a lush oasis. But turns out Silo 18's threat to its survival is not a lack of Vitamin D+ or any toxic gas in the air supply, but the nanobot technology that led to silos creation in the past.

After being kidnapped and taken on a mystery flight and helicopter ride, Daniel, Helen, and Charles met with the silo's creators, Per Stensen and Senator Thurman. Stensen revealed he is creating 50 silos that could live and repopulate the world in case of an apocalypse.

Per Stensen, the trillionaire, explained to Daniel and Helen that the nanotechnology that made him the richest person in the world has already been developed into a weapon by an enemy government. He explained how the self -replicating nanomachines aren't designed to kill humans but to destroy all organic matter into a pile of gray goo.

Stenson and Senator revealed that Iran has already built nanoweapons and attempted to ruin the US's research, leading to a war between the two nations. Thus, the blackout cloud that brought down Charles's squadron in Episode 1 was not a natural storm but was Iran's nanoweapons. There were nanobots that were structured to infiltrate and destroy equipment and everything that came in their way.

Stenson also believed that due to the availability of cheap nanobots, the destruction cannot be prevented. To survive, 50 underground bunkers were built to store seeds, books, works of art, and most importantly, humans.

After centuries, the humans could return to the surface and continue living their lives. However, the problem is that the community is not aware of this. Instead, they have kept reproduction under control, are given drugs to erase their memories, and follow strict rules.

Now, if the silo becomes unstable, the central command can reset or release the Safeguard, killing thousands. Thus, the structure, which was meant to be a safeguard for the community, is also a weapon that could destroy them.

So did nanotechnology cause an apocalypse? It's too early to say, but things are heading towards it. With Stensen believing that nanotechnology can cause mass-level destruction or even an apocalyptic event, it seems like this futuristic weapon can be a reason that has driven people underground.
