Mel Gibson and screenwriter Rosalind Ross are going their separate ways after nine years together.
The Passion of the Christ director and his partner announced their split in a statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday, revealing that they've been broken up for a year. "Although it's sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible," the couple told the outlet of their 8-year-old son, Lars.
Gibson, 69, and Ross, 35, began dating after meeting through mutual friends in 2014. They welcomed Lars on Jan. 20, 2017, just weeks before they attended the Oscars, where Gibson was nominated for Best Director for Hacksaw Ridge. (He lost to Damien Chazelle for La La Land.)

Lars is Gibson's ninth child and Ross' first. The director-actor also shares Hannah Brobst, 45, Christian Gibson, 43, Edward Gibson, 43, William Gibson, 39, Louie Gibson, 36, Milo Gibson, 35, and Thomas Gibson, 26, with ex-wife Robyn Moore, as well as Lucia Gibson, 26, with songwriter and pianist Oksana Grigorieva, from whom he split in 2010.
The pair kept their romance low-key, but when they did speak out about their relationship, it was often to field questions about their 34-year age difference.
"Regarding age and relationships, it's just a number," Gibson once told The Mirror in 2016. "We dig each other. She is an adult and we dig each other. It might cause a problem and one has a trepidation about these things, but it's working out great. She is a really special person. I dig her. So there you go. That's it. What more can one ask?"

More recently, the former couple lost their Malibu home in the Los Angeles wildfires in January, which Gibson opened up about during a Jan. 9 appearance on NewsNation's Elizabeth Vargas Reports.
The Oscar winner revealed that he hadn't been at home when his mansion burned to the ground, as he was out of state recording Joe Rogan's podcast. "I was kind of ill at ease while we were talking [on the podcast] because I knew my neighborhood was on fire, so I thought, 'I wonder if my place is still there,'" Gibson said. "But when I got home, sure enough, it wasn't there."

"It's just a thing but it's obviously devastating. It's emotional," he added of his home for almost 15 years. "You know, we have lived there for a long time. It was home to me, and I had a lot of personal things there that, you know, I can't get back."
But the Braveheart star and director was still able to consider the silver lining, namely that his lost belongings "can all be replaced" and all of his loved ones are safe and sound. Gibson even cracked a few jokes, saying, "I've been relieved from the burden of my stuff because it's all in cinders. I went home and I said to myself, 'Well at least I haven't got any of those pesky plumbing problems anymore.'"
