Klara and the Sun, which arrives in theaters Oct. 23, stars Ortega as a solar-powered artificial companion
Jenna Ortega is embracing the brutalism fashion aesthetic with an edgy metal dress.
While attending a special screening of Klara and the Sun at the Crosby Street Hotel in New York City on Monday, Oct. 19, the actress, 24, spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about her decision to wear a statement dress custom-made from an unlikely material.
Ortega posed on the carpet wearing an eye-catching ankle-length steel rod dress by designer Elias Matso, which she paired with nude heels.
āIāve just met the designer, and heās so special and so cool,ā the Wednesday star tells PEOPLE. āHis name is Elias. He is incredible. This is a one-of-one dress. Itās made out of steel rods. So itās handmade, human-made, a lot of effort.ā

āHeās been holding onto this dress for me, and itās perfect. Itās very fitting with the film, so Iām so grateful,ā Ortega adds.
Matso shared a video of a model wearing the unique dress on his Instagram back in April, revealing that it had been made using crystal beads and steel.
āBoning made fluid. Still in process, canāt wait to share more about the process of this dress and all the people involvedā¤ļø,ā he captioned the clip at the time.

Ortega, who was joined at the film screening by her co-star Amy Adams and director Taika Waititi, was styled for the event by Enrique Melendez. She completed her look by wearing her brunette hair in a center part and opted for her signature smoky eye makeup.
In the dystopian sci-fi Klara and the Sun, Ortega plays Klara, a solar-powered Artificial Friend, or AF ā a humanoid companion designed to help combat loneliness. Klara develops a bond with its teenage owner.

Waititiās adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguroās bestselling 2021 novel also stars Mia Tharia, Aran Murphy (Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphyās son), Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne.
āIām playing a robot, and itās a dystopian future where no one knows what the future looks like,ā Ortega tells PEOPLE of the role, while speaking at Mondayās event.
āItās always so funny to watch older films and think, āOkay, we thought we were going to have flying cars, and we thought we were going toā¦ā So it is a dystopian story in a world that doesnāt resembleāitās a bit uncanny in that way, where itās slightly off,ā she adds.
Klara and the Sun arrives exclusively in theaters on Oct. 23.
