Jaafar Jackson responds to comment about the Michael Jackson biopic Michael not including more of his uncle’s controversies

The actor says a sequel could offer more of his uncle’s perspective on allegations against him

Michael became the highest-grossing biopic ever after earning more than $1 billion worldwide

Jaafar Jackson is shedding some light on a possible Michael sequel.

The actor and nephew of Michael Jackson spoke with Variety about his massive breakout role in Michael,Ā in which he portrayed his late uncle. When asked if he had a message to people who have their own ideas about the many allegations against the controversial star, Jaafar, 30, pointed them to his music.

ā€œFinding out who Michael was is in his music,ā€ Jaafar said. ā€œIt’s in his lyrics. It’s in the poems he wrote, the videos, the messages he put out, the talks he gave on panels and at universities. It’s in what he devoted so much time to: charities, visiting other countries and visiting countless children.ā€

As for whether the controversies will be addressed in a potential sequel, he said, ā€œPart two, I can’t say, because I don’t know. It’s not up to me. My job is to come prepared and deliver the best performance I can. But to know Michael, it starts with the music.ā€

Jaafar added that he hasn’t ā€œbeen told anything concreteā€ about the sequel, but in the event that it gets the green light, he’s ā€œmore than readyā€ to step back into his uncle’s shoes.

Michael, who died at 50 years old in 2009, was accused in 1993 of sexually abusing 13-year-old Jordan Chandler, and settled with the Chandler family out of court for a reported $25 million. He was accused of grooming and sexual abuse of minors multiple times since then, all of which he and his family have denied.

Jaafar previously addressed the omission of Michael’s controversies — which included several child sex abuse allegations that unfolded after the period covered in the first film — and how he hopes that portion of the singer’s story is addressed in a potential second part to the biopic.

ā€œI think the second film will give even more insight from his point of view, because at the end of the day, [the allegations] are always from someone else’s,ā€ Jaafar told GQ Middle East in August.

ā€œIt’s someone else’s story. It’s someone else’s idea of what it is, and it’s mainly driven by an agenda,ā€ he continued. ā€œAnd that’s really the issue we’ve been having as a family — not having Michael’s voice being heard. I think that’s very, very important, especially in the late years.ā€

Michael, which debuted April 24, follows Jackson’s early life and performances ā€œthat led him to become the biggest entertainer in the world,ā€ per the film’s synopsis.

The biopic went on to smash a number of box office records, earning $314 million in its debut weekend alone, and later crossing the $1 billion mark just under three months after its release. It now holds the record for Lionsgate’s highest-grossing movie of all time, and the highest-grossing biopic of all time.
