Liv Schreiber created Camp Social to foster intergenerational friendships and help women connect offline
The camp offers activities like yoga, archery and crafts, encouraging women to bond through shared interests
"Our motto is, '99% arrive solo, 100% leave as friends,'" she tells PEOPLE
After Liv Schreiber graduated from college and moved to New York City, she was searching for ways to make friends and build community.
At the time, Schreiber, 29, was working in real estate and tells PEOPLE she was "miserable every day."
"I started posting under my desk on Instagram, these uplifting quotes, just to get through the day," she says. "I started posting, and suddenly I was getting more action under my desk on Instagram than in real estate, which was what I was supposed to be paying attention to and doing."
Over time, she started building a loyal following of 300,000 across channels, with people often asking for advice on how to form friendships post-grad. Seeing so much desire for connection in her DMs, Schreiber started a series of events called Hot & Social.

"Everyone had to come solo and leave as friends. Our motto is, '99% arrive solo, 100% leave as friends,'" she shares. "But then it got to be summer, and I realized I wasn't happy in the summer, and I just asked myself one day, 'What do I wish summer was?' "
Schreiber reflected on how much fun summer used to be as a kid, and she wanted to build something that could help connect women to nature and each other. That's where she got the idea for Camp Social.
The first year, Schreiber admits, "I had no clue what I was doing."
"That's the coolest discovery here: everyone's really just figuring it out," Schreiber says. "I had partnered with a camp that allowed me to bring 100 people. I didn't know if anyone else would want to come. I was so lucky that 100 girls signed up from around the country and came, and it was amazing."
She then realized it wasn't just for women in their 20s and 30s, but she wanted to build something that connected multiple generations.
"It became my pursuit to create more intergenerational friendships because now Camp Social represents every type of woman in every stage of life from all different parts of the world," Schreiber says.

Schreiber says they have campers from every age group, from women in their 20s to women in their 80s. She notes that there are plenty of mother-daughter duos and teases that her own grandmother may even come this year.
"It's really about setting an intention whenever you sign up for anything. The experience is incredible, but I always like to tell campers you're gonna get out of it what you put into it," she says. "Like with anything else, if you go in with a positive attitude, you are going to have the best time."

Building these communities, Schreiber says, "is my purpose."
"It shows how strong social media can be when you use it as a tool to help you, and anyone can do this," she tells PEOPLE. "I've loved connecting with women who are just young at heart. That's really the only requirement. If you wanna go back to camp, you're a special type of person. It might not be for everyone."
She shares that Camp Social already has a 75,000-person waitlist, and only a few select spots are left for this summer.
"There's definitely excitement, and I'm really grateful," she says.
Schreiber is grateful that she's able to build communities and watch people who have come to camp year after year enjoy themselves and meet new people. While there isn't an official rule requiring people to be off their phones, she hopes to create an environment where people don't feel the need — or desire — to have their head down in a screen.

"I always look around, and it is the only time when life in front of you is way cooler and more exciting than life on social media," Schreiber says. "It's more so that the women want to put their phones away. Like they want to be there."
"You have hundreds of women who are only looking to make new friends and get out of their comfort zones. When a private lake surrounds you, hundreds of acres and then hundreds of women who also energetically just want to meet you, how could you not put your phone away?" she adds.

Camp Social offers a variety of activities, including archery, breath work, restorative yoga, self-defense, rock climbing, paddle pickleball, stand-up, yoga on paddle boards, boating, tubing, dance, crafts and paint-and-sip.
"It's a real curated experience," Schreiber emphasizes.
"The coolest part is women are meeting just because they want to go to an activity, so you can bond with anyone standing in line next to you to take their shot at archery, because that person who is 30 years older than you and lives in Oklahoma has the same interest as you," she says. "How cool that you're standing next to each other. The connections are so strong in such a short period of time."
Camp Social runs for two weekends in the summer, one at the beginning of June and the other at the end of August. The three-day experience aims to have women put down their phones and make connections in the real world.
