Team Avatar faces higher stakes as they navigate war, political corruption and personal growth in season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender
Zuko's shocking decision at the end of the season complicates his redemption arc and deepens his family's traumatic dynamics
Aang's fate remains uncertain, leaving Team Avatar to regroup and prepare for their next battle
In season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Team Avatar grew up quickly with higher stakes and greater powers, along with greater consequences.
As the sophomore seasonbegins, airbending Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier) has become proficient in waterbending, and spends most of the season learning earthbending. He's taught this skill by the newest member of Team Avatar: the candid, blind earthbender Toph (Miya Cech).
Along with waterbender Katara (Kiawentiio Tarbell) and Sokka (Ian Ousley), Team Avatar spends much of season 2 in the Earth Kingdom Ba Sing Se. They try to both warn the Earth King (Justin Chien) of the Fire Nation's impending attack and recruit the Earth Kingdom as allies.
However, the politics are complicated as Long Feng (Chin Han) tries to keep the Earth King from knowing about the war and is eventually blackmailed into corruption by the Fire Nation princess, Azula (Elizabeth Yu). As Azula takes the city, Team Avatar — except for Aang — are locked up in a secret underground prison along with the morally conflicted Fire Nation prince Zuko (Dallas Liu).
Zuko has been wanting to help people throughout the season — even masquerading as the Blue Spirit — with the guidance of his uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), but still feels compelled toward his father. In the end, Zuko makes a shocking decision.
From Zuko's damaging choice to whether or not Aang survives, here's everything to know about the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2.
How does Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 end?

As Aang sets out to rescue his majestic sky bison Appa and his Team Avatar friends, he's joined by a surprise ally as Zuko's uncle Iroh learns his nephew is trapped underground too. Aang and Iroh rescue Sokka and Sai (Danny Pudi), the mechanist, before rescuing Katara and Zuko.
As Team Avatar is discovered, they must fend off the guards of the underground prison. Toph escapes the clutches of her mother — who poisoned and kidnapped her — by revealing her earthbending powers, breaking out of the metal cage to rejoin Team Avatar.
Together, they are able to overthrow the guards, but Azula shows up and fights Aang. Despite Zuko's heartwarming conversation with Katara about how he wanted to be different from his vicious, power-hungry father Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) by helping others, he reunites with his evil sister Azula.
Zuko attacks Katara while Azula attacks Aang, ultimately injuring him and leaving his fate unclear as Team Avatar escapes. By the end of the season, Azula has taken full control of the Earth Kingdom while Zuko has seemingly abandoned his good-natured side to earn his father's approval.
Is Aang dead and what is the significance of the Avatar State?
Season 2 certainly ends on a grim note. During the season's final fight in the Crystal Cave, Aang has the chance to kill Azula after entering the Avatar state, in which he can control all the elements.
He has shards of crystal and rock flying above Azula, ready to kill her, but hesitates as she shoots blue lightning at him. This is not only devastating because Aang appears fatally injured, but because if an Avatar dies in the Avatar State, the entire cycle of Avatar reincarnation ceases and the earth's balance is forever lost.

Katara attempts to use Spirit water to heal Aang and it appears he briefly comes back to life, but fades once again. In the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender, the spirit water works to heal Aang, but it doesn't appear to have worked at the end of season 2's live-action adaptation.
Considering that Cormier was photographed on set at the end of season 3's production and that he is integral to the remaining storylines, it appears Aang will return for further seasons. However, he may survive Azula's attack in a different manner than he does in the animated series.
Why does Zuko partner with Azula?

Zuko is known for having one of the most epic anime arcs of all time. Much is revealed about his backstory this season, making his final decision to partner with Azula one of the series' most shocking moments.
When Zuko takes out the guards to help Team Avatar escape, Azula shows up as the two begin an epic, fiery battle combining Zuko's red flames with her blue ones. As Azula has him on the ground defeated, she brings up how their lost, kind-hearted mother wanted them to work together, knowing how much Zuko valued their mother's opinion.
Emotionally manipulated, Zuko ultimately decides to side with his sister, attacking Aang and helping Azula command the Earth Kingdom. Zuko had been telling Iroh and even Katara how he wanted to be more helpful, which made his decision all the more shocking.
Between the trauma his father inflicted on him, banishing him, calling him weak, giving him a scar and pitting him against his sister — along with his mother being taken — Zuko gives into his darker impulses.
"The reason they can be so feisty with each other and so hurtful towards each other is because they are family, because they experienced trauma on such a deep level," Liu told Entertainment Weekly. "It was only the two of them that know truly what happened. It really adds another layer to this sibling dynamic. It's not just a rivalry. It is an older brother and a younger sister trying to figure out who they are and how to handle healing from this [in] two very, very drastically different ways."
Iroh is taken prisoner as he looks disappointed toward his nephew, but Zuko's story isn't over yet.
Where does Team Avatar go from here?
Team Avatar is determined and never gives up, but things aren't looking good. After Iroh attacks Azula, he is taken prisoner, but gives Team Avatar their chance to escape, which they take.
The first order of business for the team will be finding a way to revive Aang. After this, according to the original animated series, the team will wait for the solar eclipse — known as the day of the black sun — so they can attack the Fire Nation on a day where their firebending abilities are inactive.
Team Avatar will of course continue training and gathering allies while Aang must learn firebending which could come through an unlikely partnership with Zuko. Aang also appears to have feelings for Katara, but has only revealed he would like to be friends with her once the war is over.
