Every new Christopher Nolan film arrives with its own gravity. Hence, a single offhand comment from the filmmaker can send cinephiles into weeks of speculation. Recently, word spread that the Oppenheimer director has addressed one of the most anticipated questions about his next project, The Odyssey’s runtime.

Christopher Nolan talks how long The Odyssey will be

Christopher Nolan has recently offered insight into the narrative scale and running time of The Odyssey.

Tackling the much-hyped question, Nolan confirmed that The Odyssey will be shorter than Oppenheimer. After all, three hours is the longest runtime an IMAX film projector can accommodate.

Furthermore, the Dunkirk director has described his upcoming Homeric adaptation, set for release on July 17, as a foundational story. That is why he insisted on producing it at the largest possible scale, with all the tools modern Hollywood has to offer.

“There’s a massive amount of pressure,” Christopher Nolan explained to The . “Anyone taking on ‘The Odyssey’ is taking on the hopes and dreams of people for epic movies everywhere and that comes with a huge responsibility.”

“What I learned from that experience is that what people want from a movie about a beloved story, a beloved set of characters, is they want a strong and sincere interpretation,” he added. “They want to know that a filmmaker has gone to the mat for it. I really tried to make the best film possible.”

The Odyssey features battles, gods, creatures, and an A-list cast with Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Tom Holland. As the first movie filmed entirely on IMAX film, anticipation ran so high that IMAX 70mm tickets for some showings sold out in under an hour, a year before release.

Lauded for fractured timelines and tangible spectacle, Nolan’s defining films, Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight, and Inception bend genre as much as chronology. His body of work returns to time, memory, and reality, staging intellectual battles with existential stakes in films like Interstellar and The Prestige.
